Sportscar star and double GT1 Le Mans 24 Hour class winner, David Brabham’s charity kart race returned by popular demand to the Karting Show at Autosport International, 8-11 January 2009 at the NEC Birmingham. The BP Ultimate Celebrity Kart Challenge on Friday 9 January once again attracted some of the world’s top motorsport personalities while offering members of the public the rare opportunity to race alongside them for just £300.
The 2009 Autosport International race raised a staggering £44,500 for various charities including the Richard Burns Foundation, Christies Hospital NARA and the Emmaus Hampshire.
“It was originally our intention for the January 2008 event to be our last, as myself and Bill had strongly considered reducing the amount of intense charity work we do. But the event proved so successful, raising over £47,000, that we realised we actually enjoyed doing something we love while being able to make a huge difference to several worthy charities in the process,” said Brabham.
The charity kart event at Autosport International has traditionally become the battle ground for top racers from across world motorsport to go head-to-head to prove which racing series boasts the best drivers. This year was no different with some closely fought battles between single seaters, rally drivers and sports car stars. David Brabham was joined by Tom Kristensen who took it upon himself to tour the VIP lounge with a 'Competitor Height' board and commenting on why Allan McNish was not able to race, 'He would have failed the minimum height check' claime Tom. Emanuele Pirro joined Frank and Isabelle Biela who, with Gordon Sheddon, made an exciting international team that could only manage to finish 10th. The stars of the race were Duncan Tappy's 'The Good Mornins' who won the event and claimed fastest lap winning a VIP day with Dr Rik Bryan's Team Modena at a future Sports Car event.
The head to head between the MSA Race Elite squad and the MSA Rally Elite team was a close run battle until the rally boys used their sideways skills to race ahead to 2nd overall whilst Brab's race elite boys could only manage 11th.
